August 12, 2010 By Leigh Ivey In Forbes magazine’s 2010 America’s Best Colleges rankings,
Centre was named the 24th best educational institution in the U.S.

In the top 25 among all the nation’s colleges and universities, we remain among good company as one of the best, says Centre president John Roush.

Centre College has been named the 24th best educational institution in the nation among colleges and universities in Forbesmagazine’s third-annual America’s Best Colleges rankings. The rankings include 610 schools from around the country.

Whether they’re in the top 10 or near the end of the list, all 610 schools in this ranking count among the best in the country, theForbes online article says. We review just nine percent of the 6,600 accredited postsecondary institutions in the U.S., so appearing on our list at all is an indication that a school meets a high standard.

Earlier this year, Forbes ranked Centre the No. 1 college or university in the South.

We are delighted to see that Forbes once again identifies Centre as one of the nation’s best institutions of higher education, says Centre President John Roush. In the top 25 among all the nation’s colleges and universities, we remain among good company as one of the best.

Roush continues: These rankings, of course, do not tell the whole story of the many outstanding colleges and universities in America, but they can be valuable to students and families as they seek to identify those institutions that have an earned reputation for highest achievement. Centre is proud to be an institution where high achievement is prized and high opportunity for young men and women needing financial assistance to attend has been preserved.

Centre’s No. 24 spot is the highest ranking of any Kentucky institution, with the next closest-ranked school appearing at No. 210 on the overall list.

How these rankings work: Forbes and the Center for College Affordability and Productivity compiled its college rankings using five general categories, with several components within each general category. The weightings are as follows: student Satisfaction, 27.5 percent; postgraduate Success, 30 percent; student debt, 17.5 percent; four-year graduation rate, 17.5 percent; competitive awards, 7.5 percent.

Americans spend more money on college education than nearly any other investment, the article states. Just as they want home inspectors to evaluate possible house purchases, and Consumer Reports or J.D. Power and Associates to help guide their car purchases, they look to information providers like Forbes to assist them in their choice of colleges and universities.

The Forbes ranking is designed to meet the needs of undergraduate students. It attempts to help them evaluate things that many believe are important criteria when selecting a college: Do students enjoy their classes and overall academic experience? Do graduates succeed well in their occupations after college? Do most students graduate in a timely fashion, typically four years? Do students incur massive debts while in schools? Do students succeed in distinguishing themselves academically?

The latest Forbes ranking is one of many stellar rankings that Centre has received. Consumers Digest has named Centre the No. 1 educational value in the nation, and U.S. News consistently ranks Centre among the top 50 schools in the nation. (And Centre is the only Kentucky institution in this U.S. News top-50 ranking.) In addition, Centre recently was named an outstanding educational institution by The Princeton Review with Kentucky’s highest academic and selectivity ranking. Centre is also the only Kentucky institution to be named a top-30 value among liberal arts colleges by Kiplinger magazine.
